Amy's Life

        Amy Lee Matthews Butler was born May 8, 1975, in Kansas City, Missouri to Glen and Karen Matthews.  Amy grew up in Mt. Vernon, Mo, attending Mt. Vernon Elementary and Middle School and graduating from Mt. Vernon High School.

            She attended Missouri State University, graduating cum laude and receiving a Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology. She recently received a Master’s of Business Administration from Texas A & M University at the Killeen campus.

                        In addition to her parents, Amy is survived by her beloved brother Dan Matthews and his wife Ama and their children Lauren and Landon Matthews of Raymore, Missouri.  She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents Wayne and Una Mae Rees of Jasper, Mo, and Delbert Lee and Maurine Matthews of Springfield, Mo.

            .  Early in her life she developed a love of animals while growing up on a small farm near Mt. Vernon.  Her many pets included cats, dogs, rabbits, turtles, gerbils, goats, and chickens. This love of animals continued through her life with her pets Lucky and Daisy receiving the best of care.  Her kind heart led her to stop her car and rescue lost pets and take them home to try to find their owners on several occasions, so they would not be in danger on a street.

            Amy served as the leader of the Family Readiness Group for the families of Bravo Company  at Fort Hood, Texas for over three years and acted in a supporting role for over two years.  During the 01F 06-08 deployment, the battalion lost a total of 18 soldiers, three from C0-B/2-5-CAV, Amy attended many military funerals in various parts of the country representing the army to the bereaved families and being their liaison.  She also visited Bravo company’s wounded soldiers at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio  monthly and visited the wounded soldiers’ families at the Fisher House on Ft. Hood regularly..

 She was selected to represent the families of the brigade at the yearly Association of the U.S. Army Conference in Washington D. C., speaking out for the needs of our soldiers and their families to everyone.. 

            Amy also volunteered in support of the Armed Forces YMCA and its programs and received the Armed Forces YMCA Volunteer of the Year Award in 2009.

            Amy was recognized with many awards for her work with the military families including being nominated for the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal.                        

            Amy was employed by Metrokids Clinic serving children with speech, language, and hearing needs. She was currently serving as the Team Leader of Pediatric Rehabilitation,  leaving many special co-workers.                   .

            Amy’s family would like to express their appreciation for her special friends, especially Sarah Carpenter and Karol Pinkerton, for their support and help at this difficult time.  Also we thank those who have told us how she impacted their lives, and we thank our soldiers and families for their sacrifices.
